What EMDR therapy in Guildford & Farnham actually is……
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a specialised psychological therapy designed to help the brain process traumatic memories that have become stuck and stop them from driving anxiety, flashbacks, hypervigilance and avoidance in the present.
Distressing events are sometimes not fully processed at the time they happen. They remain stored in the nervous system in their original form and continue to be triggered by present-day events that resemble them. EMDR uses gentle, structured bilateral stimulation, usually eye movements or tapping, alongside a precise clinical protocol to help the brain finally complete the processing it could not do at the time.
You do not need to re-tell every detail. You do not need to relive the event. EMDR works in a structured, controlled way that keeps you safe and grounded throughout.

Trauma work needs more than a single tool. Because I am qualified in EMDR, CBT, and clinical hypnotherapy, your sessions are tailored to exactly what your nervous system needs: stabilisation, processing, and integration, rather than being limited to a single approach.
What happens in a first session…..
Your first session is a 60-minute clinical assessment. We talk through what has brought you in, your history, and what you would like to be different. With trauma work in particular, the first phase is about stabilisation, making sure you have the resources and groundedness to process what comes next. We do not rush this.
Active EMDR processing usually begins in session two or three, once we have agreed on the plan. You remain in full control throughout. If anything feels too much, we slow down or pause: your safety is the priority at every step.

After just one session I left feeling amazing & what's more these changes continued for days to come. With each session I found myself feeling stronger & better. Before, I felt miserable, constantly exhausted from my nightmares, always worrying, stressed & feeling insecure; unable to be present in the moment & enjoy my life. Andrea taught me to relax for the first time in ages & gave me tools to help me deal with my stress & anxiety.

Common questions about EMDR Therapy in Guildford & Farham
Do I have to talk in detail about the trauma?
No. One reason many clients prefer EMDR to traditional talking therapy is that you do not need to describe everything that happened in detail. EMDR works on the memory itself, not on its retelling.
Is EMDR safe?
Yes, when delivered by a properly trained clinician. EMDR is recommended by NICE, the WHO, and the NHS for trauma and PTSD. We move at the pace your nervous system can handle, and we begin with stabilisation before any processing work.
How many sessions will I need?
Single-incident trauma (one accident, one event) often resolves in 6–12 sessions. Complex or childhood trauma takes longer. We discuss your specific situation at your assessment and agree on a plan.
Does EMDR work online?
Yes. There is now a strong evidence base for online EMDR, and I deliver it remotely with the same protocols and safety measures used in person.
What if I do not know what my trauma is?
Many clients come to EMDR because chronic anxiety, panic or low mood has not responded to other therapies, and they suspect something earlier is involved, even if they cannot name it. The assessment helps us identify what your nervous system is holding.
